Myth #783 - Birth is Scary

After she had her baby (Charlie, my 800th baby) the other day, this new mum said, "You know, once you're in it, labour isn't scary! You just do it!"

I have so many clients who have carried the fear of childbirth with them for years and years. Some even postpone the event for as long as possible, just because their friends (or families) have told such horror stories over the years.

I tell my clients that our bodies aren't going to spring something TOTALLY NEW on us when we're in labour. Birth is something you know! Contrary to popular belief, labour really feels like period cramps, low down, way down there, NOT all over your body. And it comes and goes (unlike period cramps which are continuous and can last for days). Yes, it gets very strong, but, as long as the birth is normal and you have continuous support, it is totally do-able (not totally fun). (Remember, the World Health Organization believe that 10% of birth should be cesareans, no more. That means that 90% of births should be "do-able".)

Surprisingly, labour can be frustrating, even BORING, at the beginning. Your body hasn't taken pity on you and started the endorphin surge yet (ah, when it comes, SO good). Until those endorphins kick in, you're fully present, fully raw, feeling and thinking and using your left brain (nasty left brain). You start to think, "If it's like this now, I'll never be able to take it when it's 10 times worse." It shouldn't be scary if your doula is talking you through this part on the phone, or popping over to your house, if necessary. But, hang on, if birth is undisturbed (that's the key!), then it never gives you more than you can bear. Active labour begins, your endorphins kick in, and your body goes into auto-pilot...no thinking...you just "do". And you can do it!

Your friends probably found labour scary because they didn't have the assistance of a doula or midwife, didn't have an undisturbed birth, didn't work through their fears in advance...nine out of ten times you'll find that the couple were on their own, left to stumble through it alone. Now that's scary!

So, the other day, we headed to the hospital when her contractions were close together and very strong. Bloody show - check. Feeling pressure - check. Contractions palpate as strong - check! She was at the "frickety! frickety!" stage (as one mum described it). She loved standing by the sink, both at home, then at the hospital. We got through the passing request for an epidural (always happens at 5cm) and out the other side (I was thankfully backed up by our amazing nurse). As her labour progressed and the endorphins kicked in (big time!), her face became smoother, she began to sway her hips, she became calm and quiet. The lights were low. It was beautiful to watch her labour progress undisturbed. I knew everything would be fine.

This is a woman who had thought that labour would be very scary. But, with support, she found that this was something that she'd done so many different times over her lifetime - labour was a challenge which she could meet. She had the mental fortitude, life experience, and the tools at hand. Birth was something she knew. I don't think she'll be scared about anything again.

Crashing through our fears and our cultural myths is what's scary - Birth isn't.

I love this post, throughout my entire labor with my daughter (my third birth) Everyone kept asking me if I was scared to go through it again, especially since I was measuring 2 weeks ahead and was huge. I kept telling everyone that I wasn't worried about it, its one day and my body knew exactly how to birth my daughter. I had a beautiful birth with her, my family, and my midwives. She ended up being 10lbs 7oz and I didn't even tear, thanks to being in the tub. I couldn't imagine what and OB would have tried to do with me.

Love this post! My favorite part is when you talk about our bodies going into Auto Pilot, and how we just DO IT. My labor began in auto pilot,I had no time to think so I just did it. Next time,I will know that there is no reason to be scared. I lOvE birth!

Having babies is a big and very important decision. It should be planned well. There are many women who fear of getting pregnant. Some of the fears are scared of losing their freedom, losing their job, scared of taking responsibility, loosing figure. Some think they don't have enough money to have a child. But one can over come out of it by managing everything properly.

You are absolutely RIGHT!

So many moms are scared but the truth is that childbirth is beautiful and should be embraced.

I agree with most of what you said, but during my labor I had strong back pains continuously! A friend had told me that the pain comes and goes but for me that pain which was almost as bad as the contractions did not come and go. At least I'll be prepared next time! Thanks for the blog!

I agree. The mental stigmal that surrounds birth is far more harmful than the birth itself! The good news is that is it only a matter of re-education until liberty to enjoy their births can be experienced! Thank God for the sisterhood of doulas and educators that help women to rediscover their own confidence! :)

Don't be like that Destiny. You made a big impact with your post, bigger than you possibly believe. About the series ...

Very nicely put. Having experienced birth twice and witnesses many, the fear of birth is usually worse than the actual birth itself(with good support and education).
Thanks for putting it into words!

Hi there!
I would like to burn a theme at this forum. There is such a nicey, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of financial piramyde, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.

For quite a long time, I make money with the help of these programs.
I'm with no money problems now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I get now up to 2G a day , and I started with funny 500 bucks.
Right now, I managed to catch a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Turn to my blog to get additional info.

Good day, sun shines!
There have been times of hardship when I felt unhappy missing knowledge about opportunities of getting high yields on investments. I was a dump and downright pessimistic person.
I have never imagined that there weren't any need in large initial investment.
Now, I'm happy and lucky , I begin to get real money.
It's all about how to choose a correct companion who utilizes your funds in a right way - that is incorporate it in real deals, and shares the income with me.

You can ask, if there are such firms? I'm obliged to answer the truth, YES, there are. Please get to know about one of them:

My first birthing experience went similarly to what you described. At first, I was using an OBGYN and when I had finished my schooling my husband and I moved back home. From there, we were using a midwife. I cannot express how comfortable I felt with her and her assistant midwife. They both made me feel so relaxed at our appointments and eventually my own fear of childbirth was very small. Yes, I was nervous and scared of what it would be like, but after reading about natural childbirth and visiting with the midwives I felt more comfortable with the idea of it. I made sure I was not only physically prepared, but MENTALLY prepared. I think for me, especially, being mentally ready for having a baby was especially important.

My labor went so well, it was practically textbook. Never once did I think, "I need drugs!" There was that point at the end of active labor when I thought, "I don't know how much longer I can do this." That was when I realized I was ready to push and sure enough, when my midwife checked to see how far along I was, I was definitely ready. I know not all women agree, but we're all different and all pregnancies and births are different (even for the same woman), but I really enjoyed the pushing stage.

Unfortunately, there was complications and I was unable to push my son out so we ended up going to the hospital after 5 hours of pushing. From there, we did everything we could to get him out. But he wasn't budging. I ended up having a c-section, which was both relieving and disappointing. He needed to come out asap, and that was most important. I had done all of that work and I felt like something had been taken away from me. However, what we didn't know was that our son had a birth defect that hadn't been caught on ultrasound. I believe that it was God telling us that that baby could not be born at home because he would need help immediately.

When I think back to my labor and I see all of these women using drugs to dull the pain it sort of makes me angry. If I, of all people, can nearly push a baby out without even thinking that I need drugs so can they. Labor was more uncomfortable than anything. That is, until my water finally broke and I went through the last part of labor for only 2 hours. At that point, I was definitely feeling the pain, but it's all worth it! Women are born with the ability to give birth, so why do so many opt for the drugs when they don't REALLY have a clue what REAL labor is like? Why not go through it one time and then decide if you want the drugs next time? (Assuming they have more children). I was as relaxed as I could possibly be, my husband was amazing and my midwives were encouraging and made the right call at the right time. My labor was essentially undisturbed until we got to the hospital. That's how labor SHOULD be: Undisturbed. It also helped that my husband and I were both ready for it. We were taught HOW to deal with labor and to be as relaxed as possible.

I'm now pregnant with twins and unfortunately, the part of the state I live in has banned VBAC's. I don't believe in the saying, "Once a c-section, always a c-section." But for me, in my area I have no choice. However, because of my son's history and the fact that I'm a high risk pregnancy it's best that I have a c-section this time around. I'm all for women having natural births. Those who have the mentality that it's scary and going to be extremely painful and that they " absolutely need" the drugs really have no idea what they're missing out on. They're just the one's who weren't properly coached about labor and delivery. Yes, it's scary, but once you know what's actually happening in your body you have a better understanding and you know what to expect. Women have been giving birth for thousand's of years; I think we're perfectly capable of doing it without the unnecessary assistance of drugs.
